THE WORLD CHAMPION - ONE OF THE FAVOURITES WITH AN OLD SCORE TO SETTLE, HE’S READY FOR BATTLE
A well seasoned, experienced professional, Mike Golding, 46, starts the Velux 5 Ocean with more Open 60 miles under his belt than anyone else in the race.
The first person to sail both ways round the world, Mike Golding is a consummate sailor in both crewed and single-handed races and is regarded as one of the world’s best offshore racing sailors.
Mike’s partnership with Ecover began in 2001 and in recent years, Mike has dominated the professional Open 60 class achieving 13 podium positions in 7 years. The regularity of his results on the IMOCA circuit crowned him IMOCA World Champion two years in a row (2004 and 2005). He also holds the prestigious FICO World Champion 2005 title.
Today, Mike is still looking for the ultimate success - to win an international solo round the world race. "The Velux 5 Oceans appeals for two reasons," he explains. "This race, formerly the Around Alone, remains unfinished business for me! It is the only event I have not completed in my professional sailing career and provides me with an immediate opportunity to go for a bullet in a major solo around the world race".
